LOS ANGELES—The man who died in a kite-surfing accident on March 12 was a Filipino visiting from the Middle East, reports said.
The LA Weekly and Gulf News said Dante Torres Jr., a 28-year-old from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), drowned after he was entangled in a bed of kelp while kite-surfing in Malibu.
Kite-surfing is an outdoor water sport using a kite and a board to move across the water.
The LA Weekly reports that life guards saw Torres hit the water and became separated from his board and kite. Lifeguards found Torres caught in a bed of kelp and was not breathing before dragging him to the beach. The lifeguards performed CPR but to no avail.
LA Weekly further reports Torres had just arrived the day before the accident, visiting with his family from Dubai.
