Marcos to push for regional security, stability at Asean meet in Malaysia
With the country’s interests in mind, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is seeking to push for security and stability in the region when he meets with leaders at the 2025 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit from May 26 to 27 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is seeking to deepen security and stability in the region, among others, when he meets with leaders at the 2025 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit from May 26 to 27 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
At a press briefing on Thursday, Foreign Affairs Deputy Assistant Secretary Dominic Xavier Imperial said Marcos will also participate in the 16th Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area Summit, the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council Summit, and the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.
President Marcos will also participate in nine leaders-level engagements, the Plenary Session and the Retreat Session of the 46th Asean Summit, three leaders’ interface meetings with the parliamentarians with the ASEAN Business Advisory Council, and attend the signing ceremony of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045, according to Imperial.

“Now in all these engagements, the President will continue to uphold and promote Philippine interests in Asean, such as deepening security and stability in the region, economic cooperation, and broadening engagement with dialogue partners,” Imperial said.
“The summit is a mechanism for leaders to provide policy direction for Asean, build consensus on matters of mutual interest, and exchange views on key regional and international issues,” he added..
The Timor-Leste accession to Asean will also be discussed at the event.
Timor-Leste is seeking to be a member of the 10-member Asean. The regional bloc is made up of 10 Southeast Asian countries that include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
There is no information yet on whether Marcos will meet the Filipino community in Malaysia, Imperial said.
