In separate statements, Senate President Francis Escudero and House of Representatives Speaker Martin Romualdez aired their sentiments.
According to Escudero, the historic ascension of Prevost as the 267th pope marks a new chapter for the Church, offering hope and optimism to many.
He particularly said it is an opportunity for Catholics across the globe to reaffirm and rekindle a faith tested by challenges and uncertainties.
“As the Philippines, the only Christian nation in Asia, continues to stand firm in its faith, I pray that His Holiness Pope Leo XIV may inspire and lead us as we navigate the challenges that we face as a nation,” said Escudero.
The Senate chief particularly emphasized that as head of state of the Vatican, the newly elected pope is a powerful voice in international affairs, fostering dialogue among nations and promoting humanitarian efforts.
“The new pope represents a beacon of hope, not only for Christendom but for all of humanity, as we strive to build a world where peace prevails, wars cease, kindness flourishes, and hatred dissipates,” said Escudero.
In the end, Escudero wished for Prevost’s success in the challenges ahead, both as the shepherd of his flock and as a statesman for all humanity.
Meanwhile, Romualdez believes that the election of Pope Leo XIV is a source of renewed hope and a sign of continuity in pastoral leadership for the faithful worldwide.
“We welcome with deep joy and reverence the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. His life of missionary service, unwavering commitment to the marginalized, and resolute pursuit of justice reflect the best of what the Catholic Church can offer in these times of uncertainty,” Romualdez said.
For Romualdez, Pope Leo XIV’s pastoral approach echoes the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who is known to Filipinos as “Lolo Kiko.”
“Like Lolo Kiko, Pope Leo XIV carries the Gospel with humility and courage, entering the papacy with quiet strength. In an age of clamor, he reminds us that humility is power, and service is the highest form of leadership,” he said.
He then expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV would visit the Philippines during his pontificate.
“A papal visit from Pope Leo XIV would bring immense spiritual upliftment to our people. The Filipino faithful are ready to welcome him with open hearts and unwavering devotion,” said Romualdez.
Apart from the two top leaders, Senators Loren Legarda, Sherwin Gatchalian, and Lito Lapid also commented on the election of the new pope.
Gatchalian said the historic moment holds deep meaning not only for predominantly Catholic nations like the Philippines, but also for all who uphold compassion, unity, and moral leadership.
“May his papacy inspire kindness, justice, and peace in every corner of the world. We are hoping and praying that his leadership in the Catholic Church would pave the way for dialogues and unity that the world needs,” said Gatchalian in a mix of English and Filipino.
On the other hand, Legarda prayed that Pope Leo XIV would be a strong voice for social justice, particularly in defending human dignity and helping the poor and the vulnerable.
“In these challenging times, may he lead the faithful with courage, always guided by kindness,” she said.
These were echoed by Lapid, who hoped that the pope would be an instrument of the Lord in protecting the faithful, leading the church, and being a voice of the underdog.
