MANILA, Philippines — Agriculture Assistant Secretary and lawyer Paz Benavidez II was elected as the first Filipino chairwoman of the United Nations (UN) Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) during its 20th session in Rome, Italy.
“Benavidez’s election is historic as she becomes the first Philippine representative to hold this prestigious position,” the Department of Agriculture (DA) said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the DA, Benavidez will serve a two-year term as a chairwoman, leading discussions and decision-making processes to ensure the functionality of the CGRFA.
“Her leadership will play a key role in advancing global efforts to preserve and sustainably manage genetic resources for food and agriculture,” the DA added.
The commission is the only permanent intergovernmental body of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The FAO develops initiatives and collaborates with the government and private sector to ensure food quality and safety.
DA Secretary Francisco Laurel Tiu lauded Benavidez’s feat, adding that her election “as the first Filipino to head the Commission speaks volumes not only about her personal achievement but also the wealth of talent within the DA.”
