Palace hails tennis ace Alex Eala’s Miami Open feat

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine government on Thursday took pride in Filipina tennis ace Alexandra Eala’s victory in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open 2025.

At a Palace briefing, Presidential Communications Officer Claire Castro lauded Eala for bringing pride to the country.

“Isa po ito sa napakalaking tagumpay ng isang Pilipino. Ang Malacañang, ang Palasyo, ang Pangulo po ay ipinagmamalaki ang katulad  nating mga Pilipino na nagbibigay ng karangalan sa Pilipinas,” Castro said.

(This is one of the great achievements of a Filipino. Malacañang, the Palace, and the President take pride in fellow Filipinos who bring honor to the Philippines.)

“Congratulations sa ating kababayan at hindi pa po dito nagtatapos ang ating pasasalamat sa mga kababayan natin na nagbibigay ng karangalan sa Pilipinas,” she added.

Nineteen-year-old Eala, ranked 140th globally, is the first Filipina to reach the quarterfinal round of a Women’s Tennis Association 1000 tournament.

She will face American and world no. 4 Jessica Pegula for a spot in the finals.

The semi-final showdown between Eala and Pegula will happen Friday morning (Manila time).
