MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine government expressed grave concern over Israel’s offensive in the Gaza strip which killed more than 400 Palestinians.
In a statement on Friday evening, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Israel’s action took the lives of over a hundred children and cause more than 500 injuries.
“We urge all sides to refrain from escalating the violence and to immediately return to negotiations toward a more permanent ceasefire,” said the DFA.
“We call on all parties to adhere to their obligations under international law, with particular emphasis on the protection of civilians, and for the unconditional release of all hostages,” it added.
Citing local health officials, international news reported that Israel launched airstrikes across the Gaza Strip early Tuesday.
The surprise bombardment is believed to be the deadliest in Gaza since the start of the 17-month war.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly ordered the strikes after Hamas refused Israeli demands to change the ceasefire agreement.
