MANILA, Philippines — “There will be a day of reckoning for all.”
This was the message of former President Rodrigo Duterte to his supporters which was delivered by his daughter Vice President Sara Duterte on Friday.
Vice President Duterte is currently in The Hague, Netherlands to support her father, who had his first appearance at the pre-trial hearing at the International Criminal Court (ICC). He is facing a case for crimes against humanity he allegedly committed during his administration’s drug war.
In a media interview, she said she was able to speak with her father at the visitor area of the ICC Detention Center in Scheveningen.
In their conversation, the vice president mentioned to the elder Duterte his supporters who were worried about this situation.
“Sabihin mo sa kanila, ‘Relax lang, may hangganan ang lahat’,” former President Duterte said.
(Tell them, “Just relax; everything has an end.”)
Duterte was unable to physically attend the pre-trial and only participated via video call.
The ICC scheduled the confirmation of charges hearing for Duterte on September 23, and said that he could apply for “interim release.”
