MANILA, Philippines — The chartered plane carrying former President Rodrigo Duterte flew out of the Philippines and is heading to The Hague, The Netherlands.
This was confirmed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. himself in an address Tuesday evening.
“The plane carrying former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte took off at 11:03 p.m. this evening and exited Philippine airspace,” he said.
“The plane is en route to The Hague in the Netherlands, allowing the former president to face charges of crimes against humanity in relation to his bloody war on drugs,” he added.
Duterte was served an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) upon arriving at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport from Hong Kong on Tuesday, March 11.
He was later transferred to the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.
The former president is the subject of an arrest warrant from the ICC for crimes against humanity allegedly committed during his administration’s war on drugs.
The drug war claimed at least 6,000 lives, according to official government data.
However, human rights watchdogs and the ICC estimated the death toll from the drug war to be between 12,000 and 30,000 from 2016 to 2019.
They said several of the cases are extrajudicial killings.
