No tsunami threat to PH after magnitude 7.6 Caribbean quake – Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — There is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that struck the Caribbean Sea on Saturday evening, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

“No tsunami threat to the Philippines,” said Phivolcs in an advisory on Sunday morning.

Reports indicate that the earthquake occurred about 130 miles (209 kilometers) off the coast of the Cayman Islands.

This prompted the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue tsunami warnings for “hazardous tsunami waves” within 620 miles of the epicenter, affecting the coasts of the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, the Bahamas, Belize, Haiti, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, and Guatemala.
