BI deports fugitive Indian crime boss

MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) deported on Feb. 1 an Indian crime boss who was wanted in India for multiple murders, extortion and arms trafficking.

The BI said on Saturday that Indian national Joginder Gyong was deported after being arrested July last year in Bacolod City where he was living under a false identity, using a fraudulently acquired Nepalese passport under the name Kant Gupta.

Gyong was the subject of an Interpol red notice and an arrest warrant issued by an Indian court.

Immigration Commissioner Anthony Viado said Gyong was implicated in at least 26 criminal cases all over India. The offenses include murder, attempted murder, extortion and kidnapping for ransom.

He is also accused of procuring illegal firearms, organizing contract killings, and leading an extensive extortion network targeting businessmen and professionals. —Jacob Lazaro
