INQUIRER.net reporter selected for media leadership fellowship

MANILA, Philippines — A multimedia reporter of INQUIRER.net has been chosen as among 23 participants in the media leadership program by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA).

Gabriel Pabico Lalu, INQUIRER.net multimedia reporter covering the House of Representatives, was named as one of the journalists taking part in the 2024 Temasek Foundation Young Media Leaders Fellowship (YMLF) organized by the World Editors Forum Asia Chapter, which is part of WAN-IFRA’s network for editors.

The media fellowship, which started virtually on Monday, aims to develop the next generation of newsroom leaders in Asia and create a collaborative network of leaders championing good journalism.

“We’re thrilled to welcome these talented individuals into a collaborative community of emerging leaders dedicated to advancing the media industry,” WAN-IFRA Chief Operating Officer Thomas Jacob said in a statement on Monday.

“With the support of Temasek Foundation, we aim to strengthen the practice of quality journalism and equip newsrooms with the leadership skills needed to tackle the challenges of the future,” Jacob added.

WAN-IFRA stated that the fellows will participate in various training sessions aimed to equipping them with the skills needed to adapt to the fast-changing media and digital landscape.

The fellowship will conclude with a final workshop in Singapore from November 4 to 7, 2024, where participants will also have the opportunity to attend the Asian Media Leaders Summit.

“The week-long engagement will serve as a platform for fellows to exchange ideas with top industry leaders and build a collaborative network of trusted advocates committed to fostering excellence in journalism across the region,” WAN-IFRA emphasized.

Aside from Lalu, two journalists from the Philippines also got the fellowship: Marielle Alison Ventura, Program Manager of GMA Integrated News, and Roy Jerome Barbosa, News and Features Editor of Manila Today.
