Marcos congratulates new UK Prime Minister Starmer

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Saturday congratulated the newly-elected prime minister of the United Kingdom as he expressed hopes for strengthened ties between London and Manila.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Marcos sent his congratulations to Keir Starmer who was elected as the UK’s new prime minister on July 5.

“On behalf of the Philippines, I extend my warmest congratulations to the Labour Party and @Keir_Starmer,” Marcos wrote.

“We wish the new government success and look forward to further strengthening our deep and longstanding ties,” he added.Starmer, who is from the Labour Party, succeeded former prime minister Rishi Sunak.

Starmer’s victory ended the 14 years of Conservative leadership in the UK which started from the term of former prime minister David Cameron up to Sunak.
