DMW issues updates on attacked vessels also carrying Filipino seafarers

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) provided updates on Saturday on two other vessels with Filipino seafarers that were also attacked by Houthi rebels.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac said that the Department of Foreign Affairs was communicating with foreign governments for the release of the 17 Filipino seafarers aboard MV Galaxy Leader in November 2023.
“The ongoing effort to secure their release being undertaken through the DFA – the DFA is communicating with foreign governments who have communication line with Houthi rebels with the objective of securing the release of our seafarers and bringing them home safely,” Cacdac said in a news forum.

On the other hand, the remains of two Filipino seafarers who were aboard MV True Confidence, which was attacked on March 2024 was expected to return to the Philippines soon.
Eleven other Filipino seafarers aboard the MV True Confidence have already returned to the Philippines.
“So, the return of the two seafarers’ remains are expected to be home soon,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cacdac added that the DMW is studying prohibiting vessels from sailing the Red Sea in the light of recent events.
“In light of this recent incident, we are reviewing this current policy. So, just give us some time to review the policy. Just give us the room to review the policy,” Cacdac said.
On June 12, the MV Tutor came under attack while it was traversing the Red Sea.
Authorities said that 21 Filipino seafarers were rescued, but one other is still being searched for.
