One in seven immigrant healthcare workers in US are Filipinos—report

MANILA, Philippines — One in seven of immigrant healthcare workers in the United States are Filipinos, data from a US-based remittance service said on Thursday.

According to Remitly in its Immigrant Healthcare Index, Filipino healthcare professionals working in the US number 348,000, making the most number of immigrant healthcare professionals at 13 percent.

In the category, the Philippines was followed by Mexico at 271,000, and India at 176,000 immigrant healthcare professionals.

The country also ranked first among the countries with the most immigrant registered nurses, with 141,000 Filipino nurses, making up 28 percent of the immigrant registered nurse workforce in the US.

Meanwhile, India followed at second with 32,000 registered nurses, while Nigeria was at third with 24,000 registered nurses.

In addition, the Philippines topped the list of the top five nationalities of immigrant nursing assistants with 39,000, followed by Mexico with 37,000 and Haiti with 33,000.

Lastly, the Philippines made four percent of immigrant physicians working in the US, numbering 11,000 which is the fifth-highest.

For the category, India was the top country with 59,000 immigrant physicians, China and Hong Kong at second with 16,000, and Pakistan at third with 13,000.

Remitly said that it used data from the Migration Policy Institute, a US-based think tank, for its index.
