MANILA, Philippines — Government officials reminded Filipinos at home and abroad on Wednesday to emulate the bravery of those who fought for the country’s independence and use it to build a better Philippines.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo, in a video message posted in time for the 126th anniversary of Philippine Independence, said this year’s theme: “Kalayaan, Kinabukasan, Kasaysayan” should be a “constant reminder” of Filipinos’ continuing task with nation-building.

“It is, therefore, of no coincidence that the words in this year’s theme hearken back to the Katipunan’s initials, which are brilliant forebears brandished as a battlecry over a century ago. It is this same courage, the same spirit of patriotism and unity that we are called upon to mobilize today,” said Manalo.

“Let us be inspired by the katipuneros’ bravery as we Filipinos at home and abroad work together to build our Bagong Pilipinas,” he added.

In a separate statement, Migrant Workers Chief Hans Leo Cacdac said the heroic deeds of Filipinos who fought for the country’s freedom should serve as a constant reminder of “the patriotism that resides within every one of us.”

Cacdac then directed his message to Filipinos abroad — the modern-day heroes.

“As our modern-day heroes, you brave new cultures, overcome challenges, and diligently contribute to the economies of your host countries. Through your hard work and resilience, you uplift your families and showcase Philippine excellence on the global stage,” said Cacdac.

“We at the Department of Migrant Workers recognize the immense sacrifices you make. We commit to providing you [with] the protection, support, and services you deserve. We strive to ensure your well-being, protect your rights, and empower you to reach your full potential as equal partners in national economic development,” he added.

Philippine Independence was declared on June 12, 1898, by then revolutionary government leader General Emilio Aguinaldo.
