MANILA, Philippines — Forty seven Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) received financial aid amounting to P30,000 each from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Monday.

In a press conference, DMW Assistant Secretary Venecio Legaspi said 104 OFWs are set to receive cash grants from the agency.

Initially, only 45 individuals were granted aid, but two others were allowed to receive their cash assistance despite arriving late.

Another batch of OFWs is set to receive assistance on June 7, in time for Migrant Workers’ Day.

“[Sa] June 7 meron na kaming another 44 [beneficiaries] pero continuous po ‘yan dahil 104 po ang ating naaprubahan na makakatanggap,” Legaspi told reporters.

(On June 7, we have another 44 beneficiaries, but this is continuous because we have approved 104 beneficiaries who will receive this cash grant.)

Most of the beneficiaries are OFWs who weren’t able to go back to their respective jobs abroad while some are distressed Filipinos who were repatriated due to calamities.

DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac said the action funds seek to help OFWs navigate back in life. Some beneficiaries were granted aid for livelihood.

Cacdac also said that the financial assistance granted to the OFWs came from the agency’s P2.8 billion action fund.

DMW on Monday kicked-off its program for weeklong activities marking Migrant Workers Day.
