SAN DIEGO—A Filipino caretaker accused of abusing and stealing from a 93-year-old Navy veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor is due back in court this Friday.
Last year, Milagros Angeles, 63, was charged with false imprisonment of an elder, theft by a caretaker, elder abuse, and possession of altered checks after police found Arnold “Max” Bauer, who suffers from dementia among other ailments, at his home living in squalor.
His home was filled with trash and rat droppings, according to police.
Police then found Angeles, Bauer’s live in caretaker at the time, in a bedroom with several thousands of dollars stuffed in her clothing. Police also discovered $9,000 hidden inside her room and more than 50 checks written to herself totaling $5,600. Police believe she was sending money to a bank in the Philippines.
Angeles, who is in custody, plead not guilty and is being held on $1 million bail.
According to reports, Angeles had been working for widower Bauer since 2009.
Bauer’s bank notified Adult Protective Services authorities after employees became concerned by the unusual number of withdrawals and that he hadn’t been in for several months.
According to KTLA, when deputies arrived they found Bauer holding a photograph of his ship, the USS Vestal, before finding Angeles.
In total, police believe Angeles stole at least $28,000.
Angeles is due back in court for a Preliminary Exam Readiness on January 20, according to the San Diego District Attorney’s office. Joseph Pimentel/AJPress
