PCG deploys one of its biggest vessels to Benham Rise

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deploys one of its biggest patrol vessels to the Philippine (Benham) Rise on Monday, March 4, 2024. MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed one of its biggest patrol vessels to the Philippine (Benham) Rise on Monday following the reported presence of Chinese research vessels in the area.

PCG spokesperson Rear Admiral Armand Balilo said the BRP Gabriela Silang sailed for a two-week mission in Benham Rise and Batanes.

He also said the 84-meter vessel would patrol the vicinity waters to conduct maritime domain awareness and monitor local fishermen, signaling intensified PCG presence in Northern Luzon.

“We will also check the reported Chinese research vessels in Benham Rise,” Balilo said in a statement Monday.

The PCG official further said that their air assets are also on standby for possible aerial surveillance.

Two Chinese research vessels have been spotted “loitering” in the northeast corner of the resource-rich submerged landmass within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, according to an American maritime expert. Authorities later confirmed it.
