China expresses concern over PH activities in West Philippine Sea

MANILA, Philippines — Following President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s remark about the “worrisome” presence of Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea, China in return expressed “grave concern” over the Philippines’ “activities” in the disputed waters.

“China’s position on the South China Sea is consistent and clear,” said China Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning in a press conference on Wednesday after she was asked what her comment was on Marcos’ remark about Chinese vessels in Philippine waters.

Marcos earlier noted the “changing situation” in the West Philippine Sea, emphasizing that Filipino fishers should be allowed to fish in their traditional fishing grounds which belong in the maritime territory of the Philippines.

“We express grave concern over the Philippines’ recent activities in the South China Sea that infringe on China’s sovereignty and will continue to take necessary measures to firmly safeguard our territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and keep the South China Sea peaceful and stable,” she added.

Mao did not categorically state what “recent activities” are being conducted by the Philippines against China.

To note, China’s sweeping claim over most of the South China Sea, including the West Philippine Sea, has long been dismissed by an arbitral tribunal in a landmark ruling.
