MANILA, Philippines — The government will increase its presence in the Bajo de Masinloc in the West Philippine Sea, according to National Security Council (NSC) Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya on Monday.

During the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing, Malaya also reiterated that the recent rotation and resupply missions to the disputed shoals were successful.

“We are going to increase our presence in Bajo de Masinloc because it is better if our fisherfolk are emboldened to fish so that we can use the West Philippine Sea for the benefit of our country,” Malaya said, partly in Filipino.

Malaya explained that the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the Philippine Coast Guard will patrol the seas to watch over the fisherfolk.

“Our countrymen are emboldened when they see the government there,” he said.

According to Malaya, 21 tons of fuel were distributed among 21 commercial fishing vessels in the West Philippine Sea, which would allow them to sail the waters for a week straight. The government was also able to distribute motor oil, groceries, and other necessities.
