MANILA, Philippines — In 2024, the Philippines hopes to extend its reach and forge effective foreign partnerships for inclusive development, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo said on Thursday.

Speaking at the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines (FOCAP) media forum, Manalo identified the scope of the partnerships that the country aims to establish.

“This year, the Philippines will forge effective partnerships that coalesce around building climate, disaster, and biodiversity resilience and fit-for-purpose solutions for inclusive development,” said Manalo.

“We aim to extend our reach to promote South-South and technical cooperation, with Asia, the Pacific, and Africa,” he added.

Manalo likewise noted that the Philippines will work on improving its relations with Pacific Island states.

“[This,] mindful of our shared interests in maritime security, marine biodiversity, climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and public health,” he said.

Quoting the words of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. before the UN General Assembly in 2022, Manalo said the country values global solidarity amid complex challenges.

“He called for actions to solve inequality and inequities, solutions to the climate emergency, and regulation in response to the weaponization of new technologies,” said Manalo.

“Most saliently, he affirmed the rule of law at the center of an international order based on the principles of justice and equity, the ballast that steadies our common vessel,” he added.
