MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday said that the Philippines and Indonesia must remain united in the midst of regional challenges.

Marcos welcomed Indonesian President Joko Widodo to Malacañan Palace, where the two had a bilateral meeting.

“As like-minded developing nations, the Philippines and Indonesia both aspire for Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) commonality that is peaceful, stable, and prosperous. As neighbors, we must remain united in addressing the many challenges that our region now faces,” said Marcos in his speech.

Marcos did not specify if these challenges pertained to the South China Sea but later said that he and Widodo had discussed the disputed waters.

“President Widodo and I had a fruitful and honest discussion on regional events of mutual interest such as the developments in the South China Sea and Asean cooperation and initiatives,” said Marcos.

Fresh from leading the Indonesian chairmanship in 2023, Widodo echoed Marcos’ sentiments on peace in the region.

“We agreed on strengthening Asean unity and centrality that is not merely a jargon, and for the Asean to continue to uphold the principles of international law and become a positive force for peace, stability, and prosperity,” said Widodo.
