TOKYO, Japan — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday reaffirmed the Philippines’ condemnation of the use of ballistic missiles by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) or North Korea.

During a meeting with the Asia Zero Emission Community (Azec) Leaders Meeting, Marcos said that the Philippines denounced North Korea’s launching of missiles alongside the rest of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

“As we speak of economic progress in our region, we found these aspirations on a peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific region, so such dangerous and provocative actions by the DPRK threaten and destabilize the region and the world,” Marcos said.

Marcos has already expressed concern over the DPRK’s use of nuclear armaments in August, calling for a peaceful discussion to resolve territorial tensions.

Japan is one of the Azec member countries. North Korea has repeatedly fired missiles over Japan in the past year.

“The Philippines joins its voice to all our partners in peace in condemning this looming existential threat,” said Marcos.

The DPRK is expanding its use of nuclear weapons and missiles, and the United States, Japan, and South Korea are calling for stronger international condemnation of the development.
