AFPMBAI: 58 years of unwavering commitment to service, security, and social responsibility

Over five decades ago, the Armed Forces and Police Mutual Benefit Association, Inc. (AFPMBAI) was born from the noble tradition of “abuluyan” within the uniformed services, showcasing their unwavering dedication and commitment to a greater mission — safeguarding the freedom and sovereignty of the Filipino people, often at the cost of their own lives.

From its modest origins of systematic contributions to support fallen military and uniformed personnel, AFPMBAI has evolved into a guardian of financial security and welfare for its members and their families. Its membership has expanded beyond the
military to include the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, Philippine Coast Guard, and others. As of 2023, AFPMBAI boasts of over 400,000 active and retired members.

To ensure each segment of the uniformed community has a voice, AFPMBAI’s Board of Trustees includes representatives from these various branches of service, with the current Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff as the Chairman of the Board. This guarantees that the Association’s actions align with the mission and address the pressing financial and welfare needs of each branch of service.

One standout benefit that AFPMBAI offers is the comprehensive insurance coverage for members of the military and uniformed personnel (MUP) due to duty-related incidents, including death and injuries sustained from war, rebellion, military, or police operations, which sets it apart from commercial insurance providers.

AFPMBAI also enhances accessibility for its members through the Regional Sales and Service Centers (RSSCs) strategically located nationwide. These centers serve as one-stop shops for processing insurance and loan applications, benefit claims, and
death claims.

Furthermore, the RSSCs are complemented by various partner payment centers and digital wallets, providing convenient ways for members to settle their accounts and receive benefits.

With assets totaling P38.7 Billion as of 2022, AFPMBAI stands as the country’s strongest and largest mutual benefit association. In 2022, it recorded an audited income of P1.14 Billion (net income before tax), distributed P2.1 Billion in dividends since 1981, and disbursed P1.7 Billion in living benefits in 2022 alone. Additionally, it has released P2 Billion for corporate social responsibility programs, focusing on education, health, and general welfare since 2012.

Notable contributions in 2023 include the handover of the Philippine Army transient facility and the groundbreaking of the Philippine National Police grandstand in Quezon province. The Grants for Dependents (GRADE) Scholarship Program currently
supports 80 scholars, with P44 Million released as of 2023. This scholarship aids the dependents of fallen MUP members and has already sponsored the education of 300 graduates.

AFPMBAI also invests in the well-being of its members through various medical, emergency, fitness, administrative, and operations equipment, as well as service vehicles provided to the different branches of service.

As a result of these initiatives and achievements, AFPMBAI ranks 4th among 32 MBAs and has earned the prestigious Golden Arrow Award for the second time, with an impressive performance rating of over 80% in good governance. This recognition
comes from the Institute of Corporate Directors, an authorized evaluator by the Insurance Commission.

AFPMBAI’s relentless pursuit of corporate governance principles and its commitment to its mission-defining values of dedication, commitment, and selfless service solidify its position as a stalwart leader among mutual benefit groups in the Philippines.
