MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has told overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) that his administration will forge a more secure ties with countries that are hosting them.
This is to raise the OFWs’ level of protection and safety in these nations as they seek a better future for their families.
Marcos made this statement on Wednesday in a video message to honor Filipinos abroad on Migrant Workers’ Day.
The Chief Executive described them as modern-day heroes.
“We understand the challenges that you face being far from your loved ones, adjusting to new cultures, and overcoming barriers. And that’s why this administration will continue to foster stronger ties with countries that host our migrant workers, ensuring your safety, welfare and well-being,” he said.
He added government understands the struggle of OFWs.
“As you build your dreams in far-off lands and seas, do know that you are not alone. The entire nation stands with you every step of the way and all of us are united in pride and in admiration for the work that gives you meaning and purpose,” he said.
Philippines, over the years, has been known to be a steady source of quality manpower — filling up jobs in hospitals, restaurants, ships, engineering industries, automotive, and other sectors.
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the country has 1.83 million documented OFWs since 2021.
The top five destinations for OFWs in 2021 were Asia (78 percent), Europe (9 percent), North and South America (8 percent), Australia (2 percent) and Africa (1 percent).
PSA also said out of the 1.83 million OFWs in 2021, 24 percent worked in Saudi Arabia, while 14 percent were in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
