MANILA, Philippines – Militant group Migrante urged the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to assist the families of what they estimated to be 10,000 overseas workers affected by tropical storm “Sendong” (International name: WASHI) in Northern Mindanao.

In a Radyo Inquirer 990 AM report, John Leonard Monterona regional Coordinator of Migrante-Middle East said that as of 2010, they have counted some 10,000 OFWs from Northern Mindanao including Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, and parts of Visayas.

This is however, contrary to OWWA’s tally which has only 3,000 OFW members were affected by Sendong in the same area.

Nevertheless, Monterona said that OWWA should not only give burial assistance to families of affected OFWs but also relief and family assistance amounting to P100,000.
