PH team wins World Universities Debating Championship

MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University’s (ADMU) debate team took home gold in the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC), according to the university’s debate organization.

On Wednesday in Madrid, Spain, the Philippine team fought against students from Princeton University, Brown University, Harvard University and more colleges around the world for the title.

“The Ateneo Debate Society is proud to congratulate Ateneo A, David Africa and Toby Leung, for winning the World Universities Debating Championship. The World Universities Debating Championship is one of the largest and most diverse university-level majors, hailing teams from all around the world,” said the college organization on their Facebook page.

Africa and Leung are joined by other contingents from the university as well, including Ateneo B with Quintin Chua and Aly Barranda, as well as Ateneo C with Bern Advincula and Zen Tiangco.

According to the Ateneo Debate Society, this was the third consecutive year that the organization made a finals appearance.

Vice President of the Loyola Schools ADMU Maria Luz Vilches has congratulated the team.

“A great way to start the New Year!” she said in a separate Facebook post.

According to its website, the WUDC is hosted by the World Universities Debating Council.
