MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday expressed his congratulations to “good friend” Anwar Ibrahim for being elected as the new Prime Minister of Malaysia.
In a statement, Marcos said he looks forward to stability under Anwar’s leadership.
“I would like to congratulate my good friend Anwar Ibrahim on his election as Prime Minister of Malaysia. I look forward to the stability his leadership will provide Malaysia and the region,” he said.
“My personal and official congratulations,” the President added.
Anwar, Malaysia’s long-time opposition leader, was appointed by the country’s king.
His appointment caps a three-decade-long political journey from a protege of veteran leader Mahathir Mohammad to a prisoner convicted of sodomy to opposition leader and, finally, prime minister.
