PH Senate, US congressional delegation boost bilateral ties

MANILA, Philippines — The Senate, represented by Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda, has met with the United States (US) congressional delegation headed by Senator Edward Markey.
The reception, hosted by House Speaker Martin Romualdez, became an avenue for the Philippines and US to boost its bilateral relations, Legarda shared.
“The occasion gave the opportunity to strengthen ties between the Philippines and the US,” she said in a statement released Friday.
“It was an opportune time to discuss pressing issues such as the pandemic, threats to our planet’s health, the global economy, national security as well as public health,” she added.
Legarda, who Markey called his “climate twin,” expressed joy as the US rejoined the Paris agreement last year and showed their intention to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
“The signing of the inflation reduction act by President [Joe] Biden recently, the green new deal bill that Sen. Markey has been passionately espousing are shared advocacies,” she said.
“In the Philippines, we have done our share in mitigating the effects of climate change through the passage of several laws such as the Climate Change Act and its amendatory law, the People’s Survival Fund,” she continued.
Prior to this, the US congressional delegation had earlier met with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. at Malcañang Palace.
