MANILA, Philippines — Diplomacy must prevail amid the tensions in the Taiwan Strait, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Thursday.

The agency expressed worry amid the increasing tensions in the strait which separates China and Taiwan.

“The Philippines is concerned with the rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait, just north of the Philippines,” the DFA said in a statement.

“The Philippines adheres to the One-China policy,” it added.

The agency continued: “The Philippines urges restraint by all parties concerned. Diplomacy and dialogue must prevail.”

The tension in the Taiwan Strait sparked when it was learned that United States (US) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will visit the self-governing island.

China viewed Pelosi’s visit a provocation but the US stressed that the speaker has a right to visit Taiwan.
