CEMEX celebrates environment month in Rizal and Cebu

CEMEX Philippines joined local government units and its communities in Rizal and Cebu in observance of the Philippine Environment Month this June, to bring awareness and action toward environmental stewardship. This year’s Environment Month theme, “Aksyon Para Sa Natatanging Mundo” and global slogan #OnlyOneEarth calls for a collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore the planet.

Over 100 volunteer-employees from CEMEX Philippines’ APO Cement Plant and Solid Cement Plant participated in the tree-planting and clean-up drive initiatives at Pangdan River in Naga City, Cebu and Tagbac River in Antipolo City, Rizal. These are in support of the Adopt-An-Estero (Waterbody) program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). They also joined succeeding tree-planting activities in their respective communities, with mangroves being planted along the shores of Naga, Cebu, while bamboo propagules were planted in the watershed of Antipolo, Rizal.

Through these initiatives, CEMEX Philippines volunteer-employees planted 2,800 bamboo propagules and fruit-bearing trees, and collected around 1,700 kilograms of wastes from the rivers and ocean cleanup.

“Sustainability is among our key priorities, and initiatives like these that we do together with the local government and our communities help achieve our shared goal of creating a positive impact and building a sustainable future,” Luis Franco, CEMEX Holdings Philippines President said.

Franco further said, “We see these activities as part of protecting biodiversity and the environment, which are aligned with CEMEX’s commitment to the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that contribute to the achievement of CEMEX’s Future in Action commitment.”

CEMEX’s Future in Action strategy focuses on reducing C02 emissions by 35% by 2025 and around 40% by 2030. CEMEX’s ultimate goal is to become a net-zero CO2 company by 2050.

CEMEX employees from its Solid Cement Plant recently joined river clean-up and bamboo planting activities in Rizal. Planting bamboo aims to absorb greenhouse gas emissions, conserve local biodiversity, improve water quality and restore degraded soils.

CEMEX employees from its APO Cement Plant volunteered toclean up Pangdan River in Naga City, Cebu and participate in mangrove planting along the shores of Naga City, Cebu. Mangroves are known to prevent storm surges along the oceanside and provide vital ecosystem that supports aquatic life.
