MANILA, Philippines — The United States’ second-highest diplomat is set to meet President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. during her visit to the country this week.
Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman will meet with Marcos as well as senior officials of both the incoming and outgoing administrations “to discuss new ways to deepen” the alliance between Manila and Washington, the State Department said in a statement on Friday.
Marcos has met with a number of envoys before and after he was proclaimed by Congress as the country’s next president. On Monday, the President-elect received Brunei Darussalam Ambassador to the Philippines Johariah WahabItalian and Italian Ambassador Marco Clemente.

Sherman’s visit to the Philippines is part of her 10-day visit to Asia from June 5 to 14. She will be arriving in Manila from Seoul, which is her first stop.
“She will also participate in a business roundtable and an event in celebration of World Oceans Day,” the department further said of Sherman’s Manila visit.
After her engagements in the Philippines, the U.S. official will then proceed to Laos’ capital, Vientiane. She will also embark on a visit to Vietnam.
