MANILA, Philippines — No new COVID-19 cases were reported among Filipinos in India, Philippine Ambassador to India Ramon Bagatsing Jr. said Thursday.

“I haven’t received any new reports,” he said in an interview with Teleradyo.

There are around 3,000 Filipinos living in India.

The second wave of infection crippled the healthcare system in India in April and May, primarily due to the Delta variant. At the time, there were 75 cases reported among Filipinos, Bagatsing said.

India’s official coronavirus death toll is estimated at 415,000, but some studies said it could be underreported. It has a population of 1.3 billion people.

Although current figures remain high with an average of 4,000 deaths and 40,000 cases daily, Bagatsing said “the spike went down drastically” in the last few weeks.

He said the vaccines and strict implementation of protocols were factors that have contributed to the lowered number of COVID-19 cases.
