The Philippine Embassy in Thailand is ready to help Filipinos there should the Philippine government impose restrictions on flights from Thailand due to the threat posed by the highly transmissible COVID-19 Delta variant. Philippine Ambassador to Thailand Millicent Cruz Paredes said the embassy had dealt with earlier restrictions, which stranded Filipinos in Bangkok. It was able to send the stranded passengers home eventually, Paredes noted. “Now that restrictions might be imposed again … we are ready for whatever challenges would result from this,” Paredes said at an online briefing. Paredes said 69 percent of COVID-19 cases in Bangkok were of the Delta variant. Of the 30,000 Filipinos in Thailand, only 30 have tested positive for the coronavirus, she said. —Leila B. Salaverria
