Japan offers scholarships to young officials

MANILA, Philippines — The Japanese government has committed 329 million yen (around P143 million) for scholarships for young Filipino government officials who want to pursue postgraduate studies in Japan.

In a statement, the Japanese Embassy in Manila said Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. and Japanese Ambassador Koshikawa Kazuhiko on Tuesday signed and exchanged notes on the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship by Japanese Grant Aid (JDS) for academic year 2022.

The funding will cover up to 22 JDS fellows—young officials from different Philippine government agencies—who will travel to Japan to pursue postgraduate studies starting in the academic year 2022.

The project aims to enhance their expertise in their respective fields and help build a pool of future Filipino leaders who will contribute to the Philippines’ overall economic development, the embassy added.

Since 2002, Japan has supported a total of 382 JDS fellows from the Philippines. INQ
