MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday reported a “record-high” spike in COVID-19 infections among overseas Filipinos with 761 additional cases.
According to the DFA, the additional cases pushed the total of COVID-sickened Filipinos abroad to 15,850 cases.
The spike was due to an increase in cases in a country in the Middle East, the DFA said.
Based on DFA figures, 5,274 of the total cases are still undergoing treatment, while 9,536 have recovered, including 10 new recoveries.
The DFA also reported two additional fatalities among overseas Filipinos. The death toll is now at 1,040.
“To date, the total number of countries and territories with confirmed cases among Filipinos abroad remains at 87,” the DFA said.
“The DFA, together with its Foreign Service Posts, continues to partner with host governments to ensure the safety and well-being of our nationals abroad amidst the pandemic,” it added.
On Sunday, the Philippines logged 587,704 cases with 3,276 additional infections. Of the total number of cases, 535,207 have recovered, while 12,423 have died.

Globally, over 114 million individuals have so far been infected by the new coronavirus. More than 2.5 million have died from the disease across the world.
