Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana plans to acquire surplus helicopters from South Korea, the Department of National Defense (DND) said on Friday.
In his congratulatory letter to the newly appointed South Korean defense minister Suh Wook, Lorenzana expressed the DND’s intent to buy UH-1H and MD-500 helicopters, DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said.
According to Andolong, Lorenzana mentioned that the DND plans to send a team to South Korea “in the fourth quarter of 2020” to inspect the choppers the military wants to acquire.
The acquisition project for the South Korean UH-1H and MD500 helicopters, he said, was still in the “exploratory stage.”
The number of helicopters to be acquired is yet to be finalized, he added. —Nestor Corrales
