COVID-19 cases among Filipinos abroad breach 9,100-mark with 135 new infections

MANILA, Philippines — The number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases among overseas Filipinos surpassed 9,100 after the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported 135 new infections on Monday.

The DFA said most of the new cases, which brought the total cases of COVID-19 among Filipinos abroad to 9,136, were recorded in the Middle East.

Of these cases, 3,132 patients remain under treatment while 5,360 have recovered from the disease, including 39 new recoveries.

The DFA also recorded 10 new fatalities among Filipino abroad, driving the death toll to 644.

“Figures today also show that two more countries in the African region were added to the list, bringing the total number of countries/regions with COVID-19 cases among Filipinos to 67,” the department said.

In the Philippines, health officials have so far reported 69,898 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Of the number, 23,072 have so far recovered while 1,835 have died from the disease.

Globally, over 14 million individuals have so far been infected by the new coronavirus, which originated from Wuhan City in China’s Hubei province late last year. More than 597,000 have died from the disease across the world. [ac]
