DFA: 50 more Filipinos abroad contract COVID-19, total now at 8,854

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Sunday reported that 50 more Filipinos abroad have contracted the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

This brings the total number of infected overseas Filipinos to 8,854.

The DFA also reported 17 new deaths and eight more recoveries, bringing the total number of deaths and recoveries to 611 and 5,274, respectively.

Of the confirmed cases, the DFA said 2,969 are deemed active patients and are now undergoing treatment.

The majority of the cases were recorded in the Middle East where 6,429 Filipinos contract the respiratory disease so far. In Europe 1,047 Filipinos were infected, 699 in the Americas while 679 were infected in the Asia Pacific Region.

As of Saturday, the DFA said it has repatriated over 78,800 overseas Filipinos six months into the government’s COVID-19 repatriation efforts.

Over 12.7 million people worldwide have already been infected by SARS-CoV-2—the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19—since it was first reported in Hubei, China late last year.
