MANILA, Philippines — An additional 27 Filipinos overseas have contracted the novel coronavirus, bringing the total infections to 8,351, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported Wednesday.
The new COVID-19 cases were recorded in countries in Asia and the Pacific and the Middle East regions, DFA noted.
There were also four new deaths in the said regions, raising the total death count among virus-hit Filipinos abroad to 512.
DFA likewise reported that 15 more patients were able to recover from the disease, boosting the recovery count to 5,072.
According to DFA, among overseas Filipinos who acquired the respiratory ailment, 2,767 are currently deemed as active cases.
DFA further said it has received reports from three new countries in Asia and the Pacific, which brings the total number of countries and regions with reported COVID-19 cases among Filipinos abroad to 56.
The Middle East still has the highest number of cases involving overseas Filipinos, accounting for a little over 73 percent of the total cases. It also has the highest number of deaths (252) and recoveries (3,775).

Globally, COVID-19 – which was first detected in Hubei, China late last year – has already infected over 9.2 million people, killing over 477,000.
