COVID-19 hits close to 5,500 Filipinos abroad; death toll now at 395

MANILA, Philippines — The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases among overseas Filipinos climbed to nearly 5,500 with 21 new cases reported, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has reported.

Data released by DFA on Friday showed that a total of 5,490 Filipinos abroad have now contracted the respiratory ailment caused by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 across 51 countries.

Of the number, only 2,726 patients remain under treatment, according to DFA.

Meanwhile, 2,369 have recovered or have been discharged from the hospital, DFA noted, while there are 395 deaths recorded so far.

DFA said the highest number of deaths was reported in the Americas while the number of recoveries was highest in the Middle East and Africa region.

In the Philippines, health authorities have confirmed 24,175 COVID-19 cases as of Thursday (June 11) afternoon.

Of the number, 5,165 have recovered while 1,036 have died.

Globally, over 7.14 million individuals have so far been infected by the new coronavirus, which originated from Wuhan City in China’s Hubei province late last year. More than 400,000 have so far died from the disease across the world.
