DOH: 97 foreigners in PH infected with COVID 19, 32 are Chinese

MANILA, Philippines — One in every three foreign nationals in the Philippines who contracted the novel coronavirus are Chinese, according to data from the Department of Health (DOH).

In a televised press briefing Friday, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire reported that a total of 97 foreigners in the country have contracted the infectious respiratory disease COVID-19 caused by coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.

Of the number, 32 are Chinese, 13 are Americans, five are Japanese, four are Taiwanese, and four are Indians while 39 came from other nationalities.

It can be recalled that the Philippines’ first three confirmed COVID-19 cases involve Chinese tourists from Wuhan, the origin of the pandemic.

Earlier, authorities also raided an illegal hospital treating COVID-19-hit Chinese citizens inside an upscale village at Clark Freeport in the province of Pampanga.

There are currently 13,597 COVID-19 cases nationwide, including 3,092 recoveries and 857 deaths.

To date, over five million people worldwide have been infected with SARS-CoV-2.
