Three Koreans face deportation

MANILA, Philippines—The Bureau of Immigration said Saturday it was deporting three South Korean fugitives, including one man wanted for a $6-million credit scam.

Immigration Commissioner Ricardo David Jr. has ordered the immediate deportation of Ham Sang Woon, Kim Young Gi, and Oh Myung Gun, who are all detained at the bureau jail in Bicutan, Taguig.

David said the fugitives were arrested recently by the bureau’s Interpol Unit operatives upon the request of the South Korean embassy in Manila.

“We should not allow these fugitives to languish in our jail for long periods. They should be deported right away as there is no more reason for them to remain in our country,” David said.

The immigration chief said he instructed lawyer Arvin Santos, chief of bureau’s law and investigation division, to expedite deportation proceedings against the fugitives so they can be immediately deported to South Korea.

David said records showed that Ham Sang Woon was the latest to be arrested. He is wanted by the Ko Yang district court in South Korea, which issued a warrant for his arrest, after being charged with embezzlement for allegedly defrauding several compatriots in a US6-million dollar credit scam.

On the other hand, Kim Young Gi is wanted in Incheon for abduction, murder, and extortion of $30,000 through blackmail and violence.

Kim allegedly forced the victim to use his credit card in securing a loan from Korean creditors via the Internet.

David said Oh Myung Gun is wanted for fraud which he allegedly committed by ordering a shipment of goods from Korea which he did not pay after it arrived in Manila.
