2 Filipino seafarers killed in Mexico bar fire – DFA

MANILA, Philippines – Two Filipino seafarers were killed in a Mexico bar blaze the other day after a lawless group torched the establishment and blocked the exits, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Friday.

The DFA, in a statement, said Philippine Ambassador to Mexico Demetrio Tuazon reported that 26 others were killed during the incident, “where a gang set fire to a bar” in the Port of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, Mexico last August 27.

“State Governor of Veracruz Cuitlahuac Garcia released a statement in social media, mentioning that the attack was a result of a dispute between rival gangs in the area,” the DFA noted.

The DFA said the Philippine Embassy is now coordinating with local authorities and the manning agency of the two Filipino seafarers for the repatriation of their remains.

“The DFA extends its condolences to the families of the Filipino seafarers, and the Embassy stands ready to provide further assistance if needed,” it added. /gsg
