DFA verifying reported abduction of Filipino seamen off Cameroon

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday said it is verifying and monitoring the reported abduction of several seamen, including Filipinos, off the coast of Cameroon.

The DFA said it was in close contact with the manning agency of the 13 Filipino seamen as well as their families for updates on the case.

“The Philippine Embassy in Abuja, which has jurisdiction over Cameroon, is verifying the report and has been instructed to make representations with the concerned authorities to ensure the safety and security of any Filipino national who may be held by the pirates,” the DFA said in a statement.

Citing an official port document, Agence France-Presse earlier reported that “nine hostages, all Filipinos were abducted from a Greek-owned ship.
