POEA cracks down on 21 foreign, 19 local recruiters

MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-one foreign recruitment agencies and direct employers were blacklisted while the licenses of 19 erring local recruitment firms were either canceled or suspended in a continuing bid by the government to rid the overseas placement industry of misfits, the Department of Labor and Employment said.

Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) chief Bernard Olalia said cleansing the industry was part of the intensified regulatory exercise to protect Filipino workers seeking overseas employment.

The POEA said those meted with suspension, fine or cancellation of licenses were found to have violated recruitment rules from January to July.

Some of the agencies that faced suspension or cancellation eventually had their licenses restored after the cancellation or suspension was reversed on appeal.

Olalia said the POEA disclosed the list to make the public aware — especially those seeking employment overseas — of the erring agencies.
