MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday said he will be visiting Fujian in China to inaugurate the school building that was built in honor of his mother.
Duterte said the building would be used for foreign students invited to study in China.
“I’m proceeding to Fujian because they – sa University of Fujian – they built a building in honor of my mother. Tanungin nyo mga taga-Davao, teacher ba nila ang nanay ko, 1951. When that school was organized, one of the few pioneering teachers, nanay ko,” Duterte said at the oath taking of new officers of the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce.
“Kaya may building siya doon for foreign students na niyayaya nila to study in China. So I’m going there to inaugurate that,” he added.
Duterte’s mother, Soledad, also fondly called “Nanay Soleng,” died in 2012 at the age of 95.
Duterte is set to visit China later this month. It would be his fifth trip to China since he assumed the presidency in June 2016.
During the visit, Duterte is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping on various topics including issues surrounding the West Philippine Sea.
