MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines (UP) remains as the country’s top university even as it climbed 28 places in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.
UP placed 356th in the list, 28 places higher than its ranking in 2018 at 384.
“It is the only Philippine university among the 16 Southeast Asian institutions in the upper half of the list,” the UP Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs said in a statement.
According to UP, the universities are ranked based on six indicators — academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), faculty-student ratio (20%), citations per faculty (20%), international faculty ratio (5%) and international student ratio (5%).
UP ranked 234th in faculty-student ratio, 240th in employer reputation, 242nd in academic reputation, but ranked in the 601st+ group in citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, and international student ratio.
Other Filipino universities included in the world rankings are the Ateneo de Manila University (number 601 to 650) and the University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle University (number 801 to 1000).
Three universities in the United States topped the world rankings with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranking first, Stanford University ranking second, and Harvard University ranking third.
72nd in Asian rankings
In the Asian rankings, UP was ranked 72nd, with the National University of Singapore (NUS) taking the top spot.

- Ateneo de Manila University: 115th
- De La Salle University: 155th
- University of Santo Tomas: 162nd
- University of San Carlos: 301st to 350th)
- Mapua University: 401st to 450th
- Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology and Silliman University: 451st to 500th
