Duterte arrives in Tokyo for four-day working visit

TOKYO — President Rodrigo Duterte arrived here Tuesday night to attend an international business forum and meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to fortify further Manila’s ties with Tokyo.

Duterte’s plane landed 9:52 p.m. local time (8:52 p.m. Manila time) at the Haneda International Airport. This is his third trip to Japan as Philippine President.

Duterte was welcomed by Philippine Ambassador to Japan Jose Laurel V and Deputy Chief of Mission Eduardo Meñez as well as Japanese Foreign Minister Toshiko Abe and Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Koji Haneda.

Part of the President’s four-day working visit here is his participation as keynote speaker at Nikkei’s 25th International Conference on the Future of Asia, which would be held here on May 30-31.

The 74-year-old Duterte is also expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Abe and spend time with members of the Filipino community here.

Japan is home to about 285,000 Filipino workers, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs. (Editor: Katherine G. Adraneda)
