MANILA, Philippines — A former ranking government official of Taiwan, who becomes a fugitive from the law because of a pending case of fraud in Taiwan, was arrested in Subic, Zambales, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Friday.
Wu Chien Pao, 60, former speaker of Tainan Country in Taiwan, was declared an undocumented alien by the BI, making him the subject of an arrest operation by the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU).
In a report submitted to Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente, the BI’s FSU agents along with Taiwan Police Attaché Jerry Wang and authorities from the Philippine National Police (PNP) arrested Pao along Greyback Drive Kalayaan Homes, Subic Bay Free Port Zone on January 14.
Pao’s arrest stemmed from the official communication of Wang to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines last October 9, 2018, which indicated that the suspect is wanted by the New Taipei District Prosecutors Office for a case of fraud since October 6, 2014.
The suspect’s passport also expired since April 10, 2017 and was never renewed, BI said.
Pao will be transferred to BI’s Main Office for documentation and will then be turned over to BI’s Warden Facility. /jpv
